red phone with the numbers 911

Reverse 911 calls are often used to notify residents of impending danger, in the case of a flash flood, wildfire or any other emergency.

Washington County was the recipient of funding to provide a Reverse 911 system in 2008.  The system has been used successfully, including in 2009 during the Mill Flat Fire when heavy rain caused flooding in the burned-out areas.

But, the county realized that alerts could not be sent to residents who did not have a Qwest home phone. The system has now been upgraded and will also send calls to cell phones or voice over internet protocol (VOIP).
