wild fire close to homes

A wildfire in Utah has led to the evacuation of 1,600 homes about 30 miles south of Salt Lake City. The flames also destroyed three houses and damaged a fourth. The flames were ignited by practice rounds from a .50-caliber machine gun. National Guard crews thought they had the blaze quickly contained, until winds of more than 40 mph fanned the fire across more than 6 square miles. All that remained of one of the destroyed homes was a burned-out chimney standing near an empty animal pen.

If wildfire threatens your area, remember, a shift in the wind can easily change the direction the fire spreads — and it might be in your direction. Because wildfire can change direction and speed suddenly, a minor threat can quickly escalate into a major threat.

There currently is no way to forecast wildfire outbreaks, so it is critically important to plan ahead and remove potential hazards.

If you are warned that a wildfire is threatening your area, listen regularly to your local TV or radio station, If evacuation is advised, follow instructions from local officials.
